Marcel Reif is considered by many sports fans to be the best German football commentator. For more than 30 years he presented sports broadcasts on various television stations. A large number of top-class awards are proof of his competence and popularity. After graduating from high school, Reif studied journalism, American studies and politics in Mainz. He sacrificed his doctoral thesis for a career in journalism, which he began as a freelancer for the ZDF political department in 1972. Dieter Kürten brought him into the sports department and the following year he took over as head of the ZDF-Sportspiegel and made his commentary debut in 1986 at the European Cup final. After more than 20 years at ZDF, Reif moved to RTL, where he worked with Günther Jauch. In 1999, the journalist moved to Premiere and in 2002, he again commented on a World Cup final. He ended his career with Sky in 2016. In the course of his career, Reif was named best World Cup reporter several times, and he also received the Bavarian Television Award, the German Television Award and the Adolf Grimme Award.
