Arved Fuchs

Polar Explorer and Adventurer

Arved Fuchs has been travelling to the most remote areas of the earth for more than 40 years. He is the first person to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole on foot within one year. With his courageous expeditions such as the first winter circumnavigation of Cape Horn in a folding boat or the crossing of the Atlantic in a sailing boat, the polar explorer attracts international attention. Fuchs became enthusiastic about polar research at an early age. He completed his training with the navy to learn the necessary tools for his later expeditions. He studied marine engineering at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences until he passed his intermediate examination and then set up his own business. Since 1977, he has been drawn to the extreme zones of the Arctic and Antarctic with his expeditions. In 1981 he crossed the Atlantic in a sailing boat, in 1983 Greenland by dog sledge and in 1984 he circumnavigated Cape Horn in winter in a folding boat. In 1989, he became the first person to reach both the North and South Poles on foot in one year. On his expeditions, Arved Fuchs has been observing and documenting the progressing climate change for many years and has been committed to campaigning for improvement measures. In 2005 the adventurer was awarded the Tilman Medal of the Royal Cruising Club (RCC) and in 2008 the Golden Lot of the Association of German Surveyors. He has received the B.A.U.M. Award Bundesdeutscher Arbeitskreis umweltbewusstes Management and the "Golde Blume von Rheydt" (Golden Flower of Rheydt), which is the oldest German environmental protection award for special services to the preservation and deepening of the relationship between man and nature. In 2017, he received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his commitment to environmental protection. "With his documentary films, photo reportages and books, he has become one of the outstanding environmentalists of the Federal Republic," the citation states. Arved Fuchs is also one of the ambassadors of the UN Decade of Biological Diversity and is committed to the Climate Change Foundation. In his gripping adventure reports, Arved Fuchs draws clear parallels to everyday business life. As one of Germany's most experienced expedition travellers, he knows what project planning, motivation, team spirit or risk management means. Whether in a company or on board an expedition ship - the same questions arise in crisis situations: How do you deal with fear? What are the possible solutions? How do you strengthen team spirit and motivation, even in seemingly hopeless situations? Which lessons can be learned from failed ventures? Supposedly adventurous ideas often provide creative answers to these questions.
