Sven Giegold is a financial expert, member of the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament and spokesperson for the German Greens. The economist has been active in social and ecological movements for over 20 years. Giegold (*1969) studied adult education, politics and economics in Lüneburg, Bremen and Birmingham (UK). At the University of Bremen, after completing his Master of Social Science in Economic Policy and Development in Birmingham, he continued his studies on various aspects of globalisation (financial markets, trade, cultural globalisation). Since 1986, Giegold has been involved in the youth environmental movement. He is one of the co-founders of Attac Germany and one of the formative activists in setting up and coordinating the network, as well as co-founder of the Tax Justice Network at the European Social Forum in Florence. When Giegold became a member of Bündnis90/Die Grünen in 2008, he left the Attac committees. At the federal party conference of the Greens in November 2008, the finance and globalisation expert was instrumental in drafting the motion "Green New Deal" on the financial crisis. He stood as a candidate on the European election list in 2009 and has been a member of the European Parliament since June 2009. Sven Giegold is the Green Group's spokesperson in the Committee on Economic and Financial Policy and a substitute member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. He is committed to the regulation of financial markets in the interest of the real economy and citizens and to the ecological transformation of the European economy.
