François Hollande was the recent President of France. He was France’s first Socialist president in 17 years after beating conservative incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy in a run-off ballot on May 6, 2012. During his mandate, Hollande carried out important reforms which began to restore the competitiveness and growth of the French economy. He was previously the First Secretary of the Socialist Party from 1997-2008, Mayor of Tulle from 2001-08, and President of the Corrèze General Council from 2008-12. Amongst his many current interests, François Hollande chairs the Foundation “France is Committed” whose mission is to support all initiatives that contribute to reinforcing solidarity and creating bonds between citizens. Hollande’s presidency was marked by the action he took against international terrorism and climate change. By deploying French troops to Mali in early 2013, Hollande stemmed the tide of violence caused by terrorist groups. It was under Hollande’s presidency and leadership that the Paris Agreement of 2015 was signed by an overwhelming majority of the global community. The agreement aims to bolster the global response to the threat of climate change as well as strengthening the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change. François Hollande took historic steps to promote equality in France, lowering the unemployment rate, creating a “millionaire’s tax,” and legalising same-sex marriage.
