Professor Dr. rer. pol. Eberhard Sandschneider is one of the most renowned experts on international relations in the Asia-Pacific region and on China's political systems. His academic work focuses on geopolitics, German foreign policy, transatlantic relations, politics in the Asia-Pacific region and, in particular, on observing Chinese domestic and foreign policy. Eberhard Sandschneider (*1955) completed his studies in English, Classical Philology and Political Science at Saarland University in Saarbrücken in 1981. He received his doctorate in 1986 with a thesis on "Military and Politics in the People's Republic of China, 1969-1985" and his habilitation in 1993 with a thesis on "Stability and Transformation of Political Systems". Between 1995 and 1998, he taught as Professor of International Relations at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and was appointed to a chair of Chinese Politics and International Relations at the Free University in 1998, where he also took over the management of the Center for Chinese and East Asian Politics. Between 2001 and 2003 he was Dean of the Department of Politics and Social Sciences at the Free University of Berlin and from 1998 to 2020 he also held a professorship in Politics of China and International Relations at the Free University of Berlin. From 2003 to 2016, Eberhard Sandschneider was Otto Wolff Director of the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). Since 2014, he has been one of the two Deans of the Bucerius Summer School on Global Governance of the Zeit Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius in Hamburg, and since October 2020, he has been a partner at Berlin Global Advisors (BGA). He is the author, co-author or editor of numerous books as well as numerous academic articles and newspaper articles.
