Anu Bradford is a professor at Columbia Law School and a leading authority on the European Union, digital economy, governance of artificial intelligence, and global economic regulation. Her work explains how Europe shapes global business and how governments compete to set the rules for the digital world. Her research offers a perspective on the power of regulation and its consequences for companies, societies and international relations. Bradford studied law at the University of Helsinki before earning her LL.M. and doctorate at Harvard Law School. She practised EU and competition law in Brussels and worked on economic policy in the Finnish Parliament. Before joining Columbia in 2012, she taught at the University of Chicago Law School. Today, she holds the Henry L. Moses Professorship of Law and International Organization at Columbia and directs its European Legal Studies Center. She is also a Senior Scholar at Columbia Business School’s Jerome A. Chazen Institute for Global Business. Bradford coined the term “the Brussels Effect” to describe the European Union’s influence on global markets through its regulatory standards. Her book “The Brussels Effect: How the European Union Rules the World” (2020) explores this influence and has shaped public discourse on the EU’s role in the world and garnered extensive media attention. It was named one of the best books of the year by Foreign Affairs. In addition to her work on the European Union, Anu Bradford is an expert on international trade, competition policy, and technology policy. She is a sought-after commentator on digital regulation, including the governance of artificial intelligence. In her keynotes, Bradford examines European influence, digital regulation and the governance of artificial intelligence. Drawing on her research, she gives audiences a framework for understanding how regulatory choices shape markets and why the contest over technology is also a contest over economic and political power.
