Conversation with Tech Pioneer Joanna Shields

Baroness Joanna Shields is one of the UK's leading digital businesswomen and a driving force behind the development of the technology sector. She provides executives with ethical guidance for the rapidly changing AI landscape.

In our insightful conversation, the Silicon Valley veteran explores how ‘recommendation algorithms have taken away our ability to act humanly, which is evident in the way society has polarised’. Over the past decade, she has spent much of her time investigating the ethics of AI and combating misinformation. She discusses the role that technology companies should play in tackling this problem, but ‘there is no incentive for companies to solve the problem because it is so lucrative’.

As the UK's first Minister for Cyber Security, Baroness Shields has played a crucial role in shaping the global debate at the intersection of technology and society. Working with world leaders, she has launched ground-breaking initiatives to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time - from using artificial intelligence to decode the language of online extremism, to developing tools to prevent exploitation, abuse and cybercrime.

A passionate advocate for internet safety, Baroness Shields is also the visionary founder of the WeProtect Global Alliance - a powerful coalition of over 100 member countries working to eradicate online child sexual abuse and exploitation. Her work continues to inspire global action and drive change in the field of digital safety.

Baroness Shields has held key leadership positions in major technology companies such as Facebook, Google and Bebo. Baroness Shields is widely recognised as an expert in corporate transactions and was the architect of the $850 million acquisition of Bebo by AoL Time Warner, for which she received two BAFTA nominations. As Vice President and Managing Director for Europe, Middle East and Africa, she was also instrumental in Facebook's global expansion.

Baroness Shields is a life peer in the House of Lords. She is passionate about developing technologies that serve humanity. She talks about this and much more in this fascinating talk that has something for everyone!
