Chat Club with Stefanie Babst
For our latest Chat Club episode, I was very lucky to host Dr Stefanie Babst, one of the leading authorities on international security policy, in front of my microphone. As a sought-after expert and advisor, Dr Babst is difficult to schedule, so I'm all the more pleased that she found time for a chat with me in between all her commitments (and walks with her dog).
Dr Stefanie Babst's career and development
Of course, we talked about her remarkable career, from her academic training to her time at NATO to her current work as an international security consultant. Stefanie Babst has always been interested in the differences between East and West. She remembers the time of the Iron Curtain and her exciting task as an OSCE election observer in Russia in 1995. ‘Those times of change were particularly exciting,’ says Stefanie Babst.
As the first female lecturer - and one of the few women in the Bundeswehr - she taught at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College at the beginning of her career - those were also exciting times, she tells me. She reflects on the lessons she learnt in the course of her career and how these experiences have shaped her view of world politics.
Dr Babst's role at NATO and her perspectives
With more than two decades of experience at NATO, where as Head of the Strategic Planning Staff she was the most senior German woman on NATO's International Staff, Dr Babst provides a unique insight into NATO's role today and its strategic importance in an increasingly multipolar world.
The Russian attack on Ukraine: Insights and reactions
The Russian attack on Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea in 2014 is a central topic of the discussion. Stefanie Babst takes us behind the scenes and reports on NATO's reactions to Russia's actions. What does she think is the necessary course of action against Russia and are we armed against Russia's disinformation campaigns? How should and can we respond? And does Ukraine belong in NATO?
The importance of transatlantic relations
We also take a look at transatlantic relations. Dr Babst talks about the importance of this relationship in today's world and how it can continue to serve as a cornerstone for the collective security of member states. She analyses how NATO is redefining its strategic role in a world where new powers are rising and the global security architecture is evolving.
A must-listen for anyone interested in global security
Stefanie Babst is known for not shying away from critical views, which is why this podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future development of international security, the role of NATO and the dynamics of the transatlantic relationship.
Dr Babst's in-depth analysis and personal experiences provide a rare opportunity to learn from one of the most accomplished voices in the field of global security policy.
