In 1970 Paul Breitner joined Bayern Munich, where he was soon recognised as one of the best defenders in the league. He played an important role in the success of his team, which included German championships in 1972, 1973, 1974, German Cup winners in 1971, European Cuo in 1974. At the age of 19 he made his debut for the German national team, and soon became a regular member. In 1972 Germany were European champions and in 1974 he scored a penalty in the final as Germany became World Champions, In 1974 he moved to Real Madrid, and with Guenther Netzer enjoyed success as Spanish champions in 1975 1976, and Cup winners in 1975. After a series of disputes with the national manager Helmut Schön he retired from the national team. In 1977 he returned to Germany, and played for one year with Eintracht Braunschweig. In 1978 he returned to his old club, Bayern Munich, where he won the league again in 1980 and 1981. In 1981 he made peace with the national manager Jupp Derwall, and played 20 more times for the German team. This included taking part in the World Cup of 1982 in Spain, where he again scored a goal in the final. In the same year he finished his career earlier then planned due to injury. His subsequent career included property, marketing and advertising and was successful enough to give him financial independence. Since 2007 he has been an adviser and scout to Bayern Munich, and since the 2009/2010 season the chief scout. He is a founder member of the children’s sport foundation of the MP Jörn Thießen.
