Volker Bouffier is the former Minister President of Hesse and was Germany's longest-serving Minister President at the time of his resignation. He has held government responsibility in Hesse for a total of 27 years - four years as State Secretary of Justice, eleven and a half years as Minister of the Interior and twelve years as Minister President. Volker Bouffier has shaped a political era and is considered one of the most distinguished CDU politicians in Germany. Volker Bouffier is a thorough political person. His family brought him into contact with politics at a young age, as his grandfather and father were already active in the CDU. Bouffier's own political involvement began in the Junge Union, of which he was chairman from 1978 to 1983. Since 1978 he has been a member of the state executive committee of the CDU Hesse and from 2010 to 2022 he has been its state chairman as well as deputy federal chairman of the CDU. Since 2022 he has been honorary chairman of the CDU Hesse. After studying law, Volker Bouffier (*1951) is admitted to the bar, receives a license as a notary public and is a specialist lawyer for family law. In 1976, he is elected for the first time as a city councilor in Giessen and holds this office until 1993. Until 1999, he is also a member of the district council of the Gießen district. From 1987 to 1991 Volker Bouffier is State Secretary in the Hessian Ministry of Justice and from 1999 to 2010 Hessian Minister of the Interior and Sports. From 2010 to 2022, he is Hesse's Minister President. As such, he is also President of the Bundesrat from 2014 to 2015. Volker Bouffier looks back on a total of more than 40 years of experience in Hessian state politics.
