Rüdiger Bachmann is one of Germany’s leading macroeconomists with an international academic reputation. As Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan, he researches the major economic challenges of our time, ranging from inflation and monetary policy through business cycles to the consequences of geopolitical crises and economic policy decisions. Rüdiger Bachmann (born 1974) studied economics and philosophy at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. After working as a research assistant, he moved to Yale University, where he was awarded his PhD in 2007. He then began his international academic career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. After holding professorships in macroeconomics at RWTH Aachen University and Goethe University Frankfurt, where he held the SAFE Chair of Behavioural Economics and Finance, Bachmann moved to the University of Notre Dame in the USA in 2014. There, he was most recently the Stepan Family College Professor of Economics before returning to the University of Michigan in 2025. He has also held visiting professorships at, amongst others, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Boston University, Yale University and Humboldt University in Berlin. His research focuses on macroeconomics. Key topics include the impact of economic uncertainty and expectations on firms, markets and economies, as well as the evaluation of economic policy measures. He gained international attention in 2022 with a widely acclaimed study on the economic consequences of a halt to Russian energy imports into Germany. In it, he and his co-authors demonstrated that phasing out Russian gas imports would be far more manageable than is often assumed. Alongside his academic work, Rüdiger Bachmann is actively involved in numerous international research networks. He is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a Fellow of the CESifo Research Network, a Research Professor at the ifo Institute in Munich, and a Research Fellow at the Institute of Labour Economics (IZA). Furthermore, he regularly advises the German government and members of the German Bundestag on economic policy issues. As a columnist, interviewee and guest on talk shows, he regularly features in leading German media outlets and explains economic issues to a wider audience. Together with the economist Christian Bayer and the journalist Holger Klein, he also hosts the podcast “Wirtschaftskunde”.
