Israeli Ambassador to Germany (2001-2007)

Shimon Stein is a former Israeli diplomat. Stein was Israel's ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 2001 to 2007. Stein (*1948) studied Modern History (B.A. and M.A.) at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During his military service, the Six-Day War took place in 1967, in which he took part as a paratrooper. Stein joined the diplomatic service in 1974, initially as a senior analyst at the Centre for Policy Research at the Israeli Foreign Ministry from 1974 to 1980. In 1979, he was a trainee at the European Communities. From 1980 to 1985, he worked in Germany for the first time, as Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Israeli Embassy in Bonn. In 1984 he was a member of the Israeli delegation to the CSCE Conference, Mediterranean Division and subsequently served as Deputy Director of the North America Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel from 1985 to 1986. He then served as Deputy Director in the Office of the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel until 1988 and as Envoy Counsellor for Political Affairs at the Embassy of the State of Israel in Washington, D.C. until 1993. Shimon Stein subsequently held various positions in the Israeli Foreign Ministry. In 2001, the then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon appointed him Israel's ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. His term of office in Germany nominally ended in September 2007. Since leaving the diplomatic service, Stein has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) at Tel Aviv University. He also works as a consultant and author on foreign and security policy issues.
