Jan Kleihues is one of the most renowned freelance architects in Germany. After studying architecture, Jan Kleihues (*1962) worked for two years in the Berlin office of Professor Daniel Liebeskind on the "Jewish Museum" project and then with Professor Rafael Mondeo in Madrid on the "Kursaal San Sebastian" project. In 1992 he was registered with the Berlin Chamber of Architects as a freelance architect and founded the office "Jan Kleihues". From 1993 to 1998 Kleihues is the contact architect for Prof. Rafael Moneo from Madrid for the projects: "Office Building Block A4" and "Hyatt Hotel Block A5", debis-Areal and Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. After his appointment to the Association of German Architects (BDA), he was registered with the Chamber of Architects of North Rhine-Westphalia as a freelance architect, which was followed in 1996 by the founding of the office Kleihues + Kleihues Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH, together with Prof. Josef P. Kleihues and Norbert Hensel. Two aspects - the theoretical basis of the work and the preference for good detail - can be experienced in the buildings designed by Kleihues + Kleihues. They are buildings that correspond to ideas of a poetic rationalism. The buildings are designed to last - functional relevance and ageability are seen as basic prerequisites for an economical as well as ecological use of existing resources. Accordingly, great importance is attached to the choice of materials, the detailing and the quality of craftsmanship in the execution. Jan Kleihues has also been a member of the IDZ Berlin since 1996 and of the Federal Presidium of the BDA from 1999 to 2001. In 2001 Kleihues was appointed to the Deutscher Werkbund. From 2002 to 2005 he is also spokesman for the BDA's Working Group of Young Architects and subsequently a member of the Commission for Urban Design of the City of Munich until 2012. From 2011 to 2016 he is a member of the Advisory Board for Urban Design of the City of Münster and from 2012 to 2017 a member of the Building Board Berlin of the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment. In recent years, Jan Kleihues has held various guest professorships, including at the Technische Fachhochschule in Berlin, at the Facoltá di Architettura "Aldo Rossi" of the University of Bologna, at the Beuth Hochschule für Technik in Berlin, and since 2011 he has been a professor at the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at the Fachhochschule Potsdam.
