Prof. Dr Carlo Masala is Professor of International Politics at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and is one of the most recognised voices in security policy analysis in the German-speaking world. His well-founded assessment of international developments, particularly in the context of the European security order, makes him a sought-after dialogue partner in the media, academia and politics. After studying political science, German and Romance philology, Carlo Masala received his doctorate in 1996 with a thesis on German-Italian relations in the 1960s. He was authorised to teach political science in 2002. His academic career took him to the NATO Defence College in Rome, working in the research department from 2004, most recently as deputy director. In 2007, he was appointed Professor of International Politics in Munich. Masala heads the Metis Institute for Strategy and Foresight, which provides the Federal Ministry of Defence with scientifically sound consulting services. He is also responsible for the Competence Centre for Early Crisis Detection, a project for the systematic analysis of potential trouble spots worldwide. He is co-editor of several scientific journals, a member of security policy advisory boards and is active as an expert in the political arena, including as part of the German Bundestag's Enquete Commission on the Afghanistan mission. Since 2018, he has been a co-creator of the security policy podcast ‘Sicherheitshalber’, in which current topics from the field of international politics are categorised. In 2022, he was also a regular contributor to the Stern podcast ‘Ukraine - die Lage’. In 2023, he was awarded the Lichtenberg Medal of the Lower Saxony Academy of Sciences for his academic work and his commitment to communicating security policy issues to the public. Carlo Masala is regularly part of the public debate. He analyses international events in interviews, guest articles and commentaries.
