Annalena Baerbock can look back on an extraordinary political career. From party leader to Germany's first female Foreign Minister and on to President of the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations, her path has taken her to the very highest levels of national and international politics. Annalena Baerbock (born 1980) studied political science, public law and European law at the University of Hamburg and, in 2005, completed a one-year postgraduate programme in public international law at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She then worked, amongst other roles, in the office of MEP Elisabeth Schroedter and for the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group in the Bundestag. At the same time, she took on increasing responsibility within her party. From 2013 to 2025, she was a member of the German Bundestag and, from 2018 to 2022, co-led Bündnis 90/Die Grünen as federal chair alongside Robert Habeck. In the 2021 federal election, she stood as her party's candidate for Chancellor. In December 2021, she became the first woman in the history of the Federal Republic to take up the post of Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs. Until May 2025, she represented Germany during a period of profound geopolitical change. In September 2025, Annalena Baerbock became President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, making her only the fifth woman in the history of the United Nations to hold this position. Her term in office coincided with a period in which the international community had to find solutions to geopolitical conflicts, the impacts of climate change and the regulation of new technologies. Since autumn 2026, Annalena Baerbock has been sharing her experiences from key political and diplomatic decision-making processes in her role as Professor of Professional Practice and Co-Director of the MPA Programme in Global Leadership at Columbia University in New York. These insights also form the basis of her lectures. Annalena Baerbock speaks about the reshaping of international relations and its implications for businesses, about global AI governance, and about decision-making and leadership under intense pressure. She demonstrates how geopolitical developments influence markets, supply chains, investments and long-term strategies, and the consequences for business decisions. In doing so, she provides her audience with insights into international decision-making processes and applies her experience in diplomacy and politics to issues of leadership, strategy and responsible conduct.
