"Geopolitics is no longer a side issue, but affects the core area of many companies - that's a new dimension," says Ansgar Baums in our exclusive interview.
Geopolitical advisor
Ansgar Baums advises companies on geopolitical risk management and shows them how to adapt to the new geopolitical environment and how to deal with new types of geopolitical risks.
He focusses on political megatrends and macroeconomic developments as well as the rise of China and the effects of global geopolitical competition, technology and global value chains. Ansgar Baums shows that we need to better understand how geopolitics will influence technology in the future. His book "The Tech Cold War" will be published this summer.
Senior Advisor and Helmut Schmidt Fellow
Ansgar Baums has been a Senior Advisor at SUB Erste Lesung, an agency for strategic consulting and political communication, and a consultant at Berlin Global Advisors since 2023. He is also a Helmut Schmidt Fellow 2023 of the German Marshall Fund and the Zeit-Stiftung.
The changing world - what companies need to know
In our exclusive interview, we talk to Ansgar Baums about the current focus of his consultancy work, among other things. What do companies - especially in the tech sector - need to understand most urgently? How can they adapt to the new dynamics in global trade and how can they best predict geopolitical risks?
Challenges for tech companies
Tech companies in particular are currently facing major challenges, says Ansgar Baums, because for the first time in 30 years they have to proactively deal with geopolitics and adapt to new geopolitical circumstances. Free trade and globalisation are in a completely new context, as the world is changing from a unipolar to a bipolar structure.
The future will be two IT worlds
Technical standards are also affected, as can already be seen in the different apps on Chinese and European mobile phones. According to Ansgar Baums, we are on the way to two IT worlds that will no longer have much in common. This will have a massive impact on tech companies that sell technology, but also on user companies such as the automotive industry, which will increasingly have to contend with regulatory frameworks.
