Günther Oettinger has decades of political experience at both regional and European level. As Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg and, for almost a decade, as a Member of the European Commission, he has helped shape and guide political decisions in key areas for the future. Today, he draws on this experience to advise companies and institutions. Born in Stuttgart in 1953, the lawyer began his political career in Baden-Württemberg. From 1984 to 2010, he was a member of the state parliament, and from 1991 to 2005 he led the CDU parliamentary group. In 2005, Oettinger was elected Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg. He headed the state government for five years, dealing with matters including budgetary, education, research and infrastructure policy. In 2010, Günther Oettinger became a Member of the European Commission. His first portfolio was Energy; from 2014, he was responsible for the Digital Economy and Society; and from 2017 to 2019, for Budget and Human Resources. Over many years, he dealt with issues that remain of great importance to the economy and politics to this day, and in doing so earned great respect across the political spectrum for his ability to familiarise himself quickly and thoroughly with new subject areas. Günther Oettinger has received numerous awards for his work. His honours include the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, and the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg. Following his departure from the European Commission, Oettinger moved into the private sector and consultancy. Through Oettinger Consulting, he advises companies, institutions and organisations on economic and political issues. In his lectures, Günther Oettinger analyses political and economic developments from a European perspective. His focus is particularly on Europe’s competitiveness, digitalisation, energy, geopolitical changes and the future of the European Union.
