Michael Hüther is one of Germany’s leading economists. Born 1962 in Düsseldorf, he studied economics and history at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen and at University of East Anglia in Norwich. He graduated in Economics in 1987 and started his professional career as research and teaching assistant at the Chair of Economics II (Public Finance). In 1990 he made his dissertation with summa cum laude (Dr. rer. pol.) and became lecturer at the Handelshochschule Leipzig, the Fachhochschule Giessen and the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. From 1991 to 1994 he was staff member of the German Council of Economic Advisers and until 1995 he was member of the working group "Tax Estimation" at the Federal Ministry of Finance. He became Secretary General of the German Council of Economic Advisers before he was chief economist of DekaBank until 2004. Since August 2001 Michael Hüther is honorary professor for Economics at the European Business School Schloss Reichartshausen in Oestrich-Winkel and since July 2004 he is director and member of the main board of the Cologne Institute for Economic Research.
