Jim O'Neill worked for Goldman Sachs Group Inc. from 1995-2013,serving most recently as chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. He was also the firm's chief economist from 2001-11. Before joining Goldman Sachs, he was head of global research at Swiss Bank Corp. He joined SBC in 1988. Prior to that, he was with Bank of America and International Treasury Management, a division of Marine Midland Bank. O'Neill is the creator of the BRIC acronym, which was derived from his thesis that Brazil, Russia, India and China would dominate growth in emerging markets. Together with his colleagues, he has published a lot of research about BRICs which has become synonymous with the emergence of Brazil, Russia, India and China as the growth opportunities of the future. He is a member of the boards of the Brussels- based policy-research centres Itinera Institute and Bruegel. He is a member of the UK-India Round Table and the UKIBC. He is chairman and one of the founding trustees of the London-based charity SHINE. O'Neill is also chairman of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership Advisory Board. He serves on the board of Teach for All and a number of other charities specialising in education. He previously served as a non-executive director of Manchester United before it returned to private ownership in 2005. On 2 July 2014 he was appointed by UK Prime Minister David Cameron to head an international commission to investigate global antimicrobial resistance and since May 2015 he is commercial secretary for city devolution and infrastructure for the UK Treasury as well as a Life Peer as Baron O'Neill of Gatley. He earned a degree in economics from Sheffield University in 1978 and a PhD from the University of Surrey in 1982. He received an honorary doctorate from the Institute of Education, University of London, in 2009 for his educational philanthropy. As of January 2014, he is an Honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Manchester.
