Leading Expert on the US and on Transatlantic Relations

Dr. Josef Braml is expert on transatlantic relations and American views on world order. He is editor-in-chief of the German Council on Foreign Relation’s Yearbook. Braml earned a PhD in political science, sociology, and French cultural studies from the University of Passau. He also studied international business, languages, and cultural studies at the University of Passau and the University of Nice – Sophia Antipolis. From 1997 to 1998 Braml was congressional fellow of the American Political Science Association and a member of the legislative staff in the US House of Representatives. Afterwards he was guest scholar at the Brookings Institution until 1999 and later in 1999 he becam a consultant at the World Bank. In 2001 he became project leader at the Aspen Institute Berlin and in 2002 he became research fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) in Berlin. From 2006 to 2021 he was a resident fellow of the Transatlantic Relations programme of the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP). Since 2021 he is active in teaching and research at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. Braml is author of several books and an expert on US security, energy and trade policy.
